House Education Committee Meeting Today, 1:30 pm

The Washington State House Education Committee will be meeting at 1:30 today, a number of education bills will be considered including a bill that would assign letter grades to schools (SB 5328) and a bill that would allow the state to take over persistently low performing schools. (SB 5329)

New Franciscan Medical Building at St. Joseph's Saw First Patients This Week

Transforming the health care experience for patients is the inspiration behind the new Franciscan Medical Building at St. Joseph's which saw its first patients this week.  The new 120,000 square-foot destination care center, located at 1608 South J Street in Tacoma, was developed by Franciscan Health System and Frauenshuh HealthCare Real Estate Solutions.

Rep. Derek Kilmer on Northwest Now Tonight

Filling the shoes of retired Congressman, Norm Dicks, is a mighty big job. The job taken up by Derek Kilmer, freshman Congressman representing Washington’s 6th district.

A former member of the Washington State Senate, Kilmer represented the 26th district from 2007 to 2013, moving from the  Washington House of Representatives where he served from 2005 through 2007.

The Congressman is an alumnus of Princeton University. He won a Marshall Scholarship to the University of Oxford, where he earned a PhD.

Donate food while reducing library fines

The availability of food items at local food banks are traditionally at an all-time low after the December holidays, but the Tacoma Public Library is hoping to change that through a new program where library patrons can help feed the hungry while eliminating overdue fines. Beginning on February 19 Tacoma's libraries will hold a community food drive at all 8 locations.

Murray Morgan Bridge Rededication Ceremony

The Associated Press 

Tacoma celebrated the 100th anniversary Friday of the historic Murray Morgan Bridge, which crosses the Thea Foss Waterway to connect downtown with the port area.

The bridge reopened February 1 after a closure of nearly six years for repairs. The $53 million project renovated the deck and mechanical and electrical systems to operate the lift span. Two lanes were converted to bicycle and pedestrian pathways. About 5,000 vehicles a day use the bridge.
