I-5 Southbound 38th Street Closure for Three Months

On Saturday, April 20, crews will close the southbound I-5 exit to South 38th Street in Tacoma. The ramp will remain closed for three months through July. During the closure, crews will demolish the existing ramp and build approaches for a new ramp.

Ethnic Fest Poster Contest Recognizes Student Talent

Ethnic Fest 2013 will be held on July 27 and 28 in Tacoma’s Wright Park. In preparation for this annual celebration of culture and community, all Pierce County high school students are invited to participate in the Ethnic Fest Poster Contest.

In addition to the pride and recognition gained by participating in the contest, cash prizes will be awarded to the top three student artist winners.

Tacoma Community College Diversity Film Festival Coming Up

The Tacoma Community College 3rd Annual Diversity Film Festival is April 14-25 at The Grand Cinema.

According to  Tina Celentano a festival organizer the Diversity Film Festival is “to entertain and inspire, to explore and celebrate individual and cultural differences through film.” When the organizers convened in 2009 the organizers were showing films on campus every quarter but the idea for a festival in conjunction with the Grand was an idea and a dream the campus entertained.

Just in time for spring break, the Pierce College Science Dome is presenting a new, interactive kids’ show about the moon and a cutting-edge production about the earth’s global climate.

The Science Dome also has new hours for the spring. General audience shows, featuring a rotation of titles, will be 7 p.m. Fridays and 3:15 p.m. Saturdays. Children’s shows will be 2 p.m. Saturdays.

School Board buys three months to consider becoming a charter school authorizer

The Tacoma School Board voted 4-1 Thursday to file a letter of intent to become a charter school authorizer” with the State Board of Education before the April 1 deadline.

The decision does not commit Tacoma Public Schools or the School Board to becoming an authorizer of charter schools in Tacoma. However, it buys the board several more months to consider it as an option. If the board failed to file a letter of intent, it could not later decide to become an authorizer of charter schools.

Murray Morgan Bridge short term closure planned this weekend

Friday, March 29, 7 p.m. through Sunday, March 31, 12 p.m., the Murray Morgan Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic to complete the installation of steel channels that are blocked by the counterweights when the bridge is in the down position.

In addition, this closure will be used to complete stenciling of the counterweights which was postponed earlier in the year due to weather.

The lift span will be in the up position all weekend for marine traffic.

University of Puget Sound Flea Market Tomorrow

The popular flea market run by the Women’s League of University of Puget Sound will be held this year on Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 60 booths will offer antiques and collectibles, artwork, handcrafts, artisan and vintage jewelry, home and garden items, furniture, clothing, glassworks, locally-sourced foods, and more at Memorial Fieldhouse, near the corner of Union Ave. and N. 11th St. in Tacoma. Admission is $3. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Parking is free.

Day Care Worker Targeted in Brutal Attack

A man who claimed he wanted to enroll his child brutally attacked a daycare worker as she was opening up early this morning, in South Tacoma.
