World Breastfeeding Week News Flash: We're Still Mammals!
Who Knew? Word has it the "nurse out" boobilation (yeah, that's right, I said boobilation) in the park was a big success. The News Tribune was there, as were KIRO and KOMO (no links to those stories, yet.)
I experienced a little bit of culture shock when I moved here from the bay area, with my then 1 year old daughter still nursing. Where were all the breastfeeding moms? Huddled in the bathroom? Sitting in hot cars? Pumping? Or just quitting early because who wants to put up with all the isolation?
I see lots of moms nursing at the market, and I'm glad to be able to provide a space where they know they're welcome. Time for the rest of Pierce County to do the same. If it's OK to stand in a window on Steilacoom Blvd in nothing but pasties, stirring coffee with your finger, I think we can handle a practice that used to be as common as dirt and as pure as......mother's milk.
Oh just so you know, it's also the law.

I was so excited to hear the success of the "nurse out" on KIRO's AM 1000 radio show. Way to represent!

Awesome! Wish we could have made it. We also moved here from the bay area when my daughter was around 1, and I just sort of went into hiding as far as nursing was concerned. When she was more of a baby, I'd try to be discrete in where I sat, but she never liked to be covered up, so I didn't do it. Now that she's two and we're still going with the nursing around here, we pretty much stick to the car or at home. I just don't see anyone nursing a toddler around here. I do see folks with small babies, who are generally completely covered up.

Who cares what people think! I nursed my daughter until she was nearly three, through my second pregnancy as well as nursing both my daughter and son for a period. I had many many people tell me I was crazy, give me weird looks, ask me rude questions etc etc. Both of my children are very healthy, I am proud of my decisions regarding breastfeeding and wouldn't change a thing. That being said, I understand it can be hard to nurse publicly, especially around here, and hope this event made it that much easier for breastfeeding moms in the area.
