Ever since sailors started bottling ships, the world has held a fascination for these miniature creations. The ancient art of ships in bottles dates back to the era when sea voyages lasted months or even years. Sailors lovingly crafted these beautiful models as a way to occupy their time. Seaman created these pieces of nautical art from whatever raw material came to hand. No one knows when, where, and to whom the idea first occurred of putting ships inside bottles. Perhaps an empty shipboard bottle piqued the imagination of some long-ago salt, leading him to devise this way of preserving a replica of his vessel. Often these creations would turn up in the oddest places as sailors parted with their keepsakes as gifts or to pay debts run up in port.
How in the world does one get a ship into a bottle? Come find out from Pacific Northwest “Ships in Bottles” artist, Jeff Simmons. Learn all Jeff’s secrets, see some of his creations, and with his help, bottle a ship of your very own…a treasure you can take home!
