Wapato Hills (169 Good Days in Tacoma)

Every time I think the parks around here can't get any cooler, we find another hidden gem.

Wapato Hills is my new favorite playground. (For this week, anyway.) It's the first park in Tacoma to have a sprayground, and thanks to its relatively hidden location and lack of a Summer playground program, it seems like it's only used by neighborhood kids. I'm getting tired of the overcrowding at Jefferson and other North end parks, so Wapato Hills was a welcome break.

This park has some awesome playground equipment, probably best suited to kids over the age of 5. The swings are set too high for my kids to get on them without help. The sprayground is only bordered by a wall on one side, so the kids flow freely back and forth from the dry to the wet area. For older kids, these are all good things, though. Everyone there seemed to be having a great time yesterday.

There's not a lot of shade, and most of the plentiful benches and picnic tables aren't situated under the small trees, so I recommend bringing your own chair or blankets to set up under a tree.

More pictures of this playground and other playgrounds we've visited available at our Tacoma Playgrounds set on Flickr.

Every since you posted your view on Wapato Hills my family and I cannot get enough of this park. It's like a little hidden oasis. And like you said before it's not as crowded as Jefferson Park. My girls love the expansive playground and all the different slides. My girl's also love being able to control the spray part by hitting the button. I love the paved trail that goes all the way around the park. At it's tallest the hill is perfect to roll down. So in a nutshell you really hit the mark on this park it's a perfect hidden gem.

I'm glad you like it! We need to go back. Now that I've developed a little backlog of story material I can actually take the kids to the same place twice. I think it would make a great place to sled, too, don't you?
