Profiles of Gifted Adolescents

Presentation and Discussion with Sandi Wollum, Head of School

Some gifted children are easy to spot - they always have the answer, are successful in school, and seem to excel at everything they do.  But others are harder to recognize.  They have great vocabularies and unique ideas, but are bored or underachieving at school.  Often in the case of gifted girls, they hide their ability to fit in socially.  Using Betts and Neihart's, "Profiles of the Gifted and Talented" as a guide, join this discussion of how to recognize and meet the needs of those gifted children who often go unnoticed in schools.  Special attention will be paid to gifted girls, who often excel in elementary school only to "go underground" once they reach upper elementary or middle school.  Learn strategies for supporting your gifted girls so they don't minimize their academic talent to fit in socially, and to recognize the abilities of other "underground" gifted teens.
