Tacoma School Board and District Officials Discuss School Closures

The News Tribune reports the Tacoma School Board is considering temporary closure of Foss High School and several smaller elementary schools as a way to address a looming budget crisis in the wake of massive cuts to state funding.

According to the TNT, district officials revealed at tonight's School Board study session that elementary schools with enrollment of less than 300 would be most likely to face closure, with an eventual goal of increasing class size by an average of 1 student per class.  Schools in this category include:

  • Franklin
  • Geiger*
  • Lyon
  • McKinley
  • Roosevelt
  • Stanley
  • Wainwright

*Geiger is currently undergoing renovations and piloting a Montessori-style curriculum, it is unlikely to be chosen for closure.
