Super Buffet (161 Good Days in Tacoma: Super Stuffed)

Last night, my husband was unexpectedly grounded due to brake trouble, and we all piled into the Tacomamama-mobile for a trip to Super Buffet, in Dupont. Dupont is a Playmobile version of a city, just South of Fort Lewis. Super Buffet is in Northwest Landing, a collection of businesses surrounded by perfectly manicured townhomes without so much as a misplaced lawn chair or child's toy to give any indication that people actually live inside.

Despite the generic-sounding name, and sterile location, Super Buffet is more like Great Wall in Lakewood than the Old Country Buffet. It's a rather large (though not perhaps quite as heroic-ly large as the name implies) Chinese buffet with some American, Korean, and Japanese options. Like Great Wall, the seafood dishes and Korean vegetables make up the best choices, better to leave the fried food alone. There are also some nice touches you can't get at Great Wall - real ice cream, scoop your own, instead of the runny frozen yogurt machine, and a wider variety of seafood options.

The decor is pretty super-shiny stripmall, but there are some fun additions like a fountain in the entryway with two tiny turtles. The service was a little slow in bringing place settings and drinks. If you're in the area, or driving from Olympia to Tacoma, and looking for an alternative to the chain restaurants that dot that stretch of freeway, Super Buffet is a fun place to stop for an informal meal. I'm not sure if we'll drive the extra miles too often, with other great options close to home, but it's nice to know there's something interesting along I-5 South.
