Sunnyside Beach
I've been waiting for another sunny day to talk about Sunnyside, but I think yesterday was probably it for the rest of the weekend. We checked it out last Sunday when temperatures were in the 80s, and it seemed like the entire South Sound had decided to drive to Steilacoom and enjoy a day at the beach.

Sunnyside is a Steilacoom park that requires a five dollar parking fee from anyone not a resident. It boasts a long beach, picnic tables, playground, swings, a beach volleyball court and enough grass for a game of frisbee, if you stake it out early in the day.

I hadn't been to Sunnyside in a few years, and I thought I remembered more sand and less of the pebbly stuff that characterizes most South Sound beaches. If there was more it's now washed away, but there's still enough to spread out a towel in the sun and make a sand castle or two.

According to some divers we saw, the temperature of the water this weekend was still about 50 degrees, fine for a chilly walk when you can't take the heat anymore, but not really anything you can swim in without a wet suit. When the kids finally manage to prove this to themselves, there's also a nice playground.

The only real advantage Sunnyside has over Titlow, that I can see, is that the water seems a little bit cleaner and the playground is closer to the beach. I admit it's an absolutely stunning drive, getting there from University Place by Chambers Creek Road. Like all area beaches, swimsocks or other beach friendly shoes are recommended. That pebbly sand really hurts after a while.
