Stand for Children, a state-wide grassroots education advocacy organization, has announced their endorsement of Catherine Ushka-Hall in the contested Tacoma School Director Position 2 race. "Catherine will bring a fresh perspective to the school board" states Jennifer Boutell, Tacoma parent and Stand for Children North End Team Coordinator. If elected, Catherine will be the only East Tacoma school board member in recent memory, and the only member with children attending district schools. "Catherine offers not just a fresh perspective, but one that is informed by an in depth knowledge of state and local education policy, and the real world experience of raising two public school children." Stand cites Catherine's promises of greater accountability, improved transparency, and gutsy leadership backed by her proven record of community involvement as determining factors in their decision to back her campaign. As a member of the East Side Neighborhood Council, and former member of the Tacoma School District Citizens Advisory Committee on School Consolidation, Catherine voiced the concerns of East Side families during the school consolidation process. She has volunteered in local schools and community programs since 1999. "The current economic crisis brings with it grave challenges," stated McCarver elementary teacher and Stand for Children Hilltop Team Coordinator Lori Goodrich. "We must have a school board that recognizes the problems faced by today's families, throughout Tacoma. Catherine's election will bring us closer to that reality." Numerous local groups have chosen to back Catherine, in addition to Stand for Children, she has received the endorsement of the Tacoma Firefighters IAFF #31, the Pierce County Democratic Central Committee, as well as the 27th and 29th Legislative District Democrats, the Tacoma Education Association, and the Black Collective. In addition to the East Side Neighborhood Council and Tacoma School District Citizens Advisory Committee on School Consolidation, Catherine has served on the Tacoma Human Services Commission, the Tacoma Public Schools Finance Committee, and the Tacoma Community Council.
