Yeah, that's right. Donkey Bananas.

I'm not sure what to do with my donkey bananas now that I have them, but that's one of the items I couldn't pass up at La Huerta #2, the newish hispanic grocery that opened in the space formerly occupied by Garlic City Grocery this December. I'm a little sad to see Garlic City go, but in all truth their prices were always a bit too high on common items. At La Huerta, the common and the uncommon are both fairly cheap.

.99 a pound tomatoes were a welcome site, as were the yummy gluten free rice pudding cups for 1.29 each. Like a lot of hispanic grocery stores, La Huerta's got fantastic prices on large bulk quantities of spices, and dried and fresh chilis.

This particular visit, the fruit caught my eye. All the varieties of banana reminded me of ensie's review of The Fruit Hunters, and I had to try a couple out. I'm still waiting for my donkey bananas to ripen a little more, I'll report back on the results.

La Huerta also has a small restaurant in the back of the store, I need to come back some time soon and give it a try. They apparently make their own flour tortillas, formerly my number one favorite food item. Best place in town to get a giant pinata, as well.

I haven't been around the 56th area in a few months, but there was a great authentic mexican eatery right there on 56th & Tac. called "La Guadalajara" that made their own tortillas. We used to go and just buy the totillas to-go. Nothing beats a homemade tortilla.

Otherwise, I'd love to join you when you go back to the monkey-banana restaurant. Then we can stop by Custom Shirt Shop and harass them appropriately.

I tried one of my donkey bananas this morning. Tasty! Sweet but firmer in the middle than your basic Chiquita banana, I think it would hold up really well in a dessert. I see something with caramel sauce in my future.

I opened it like a plantain: cut off the ends, scored it down the middle and pulled the peel back. It was a little too tough to just peel.

I am totally drawing a blank on the custom shirt shop reference.

The question is - do they have ice cream bananas? That's the real test. I totally want to go with you next time to check out their inventory.
