Oppenheimer Cafe and Harned Hall (270 Good Days in Tacoma: Science and Coffee at UPS)

(Puget Sound from space)

Today we had a little adventure on the UPS campus. I had heard tell of a new coffee shop inside the brand new Harned Hall science center, and I thought the kids would like some of the Science on Display.

My six year old was totally enthralled by the Foucault Pendulum,

and the gray whale skeleton, which hangs suspended over the roof of the lobby.

Find out more about him at his Myspace page. I like his taste in music.

My 4 year old was less enthralled, so we headed to the beautiful courtyard and the Oppenheimer Cafe, inside a really cool glass gazebo. Like the Diversions Cafe in the student center (more on that another time) they serve Fair Trade coffee, and of course the always-important chocolate milk. They also have an assortment of sandwiches and salads.

Behind the cafe is Thompson Hall, where the Slater Museum of Natural History is currently under construction. It is slated to open some time this Fall and promises lots more science fun. Harned Hall and the Science Center are free and open to members of the community.
