Meat Shop of Tacoma (297 Good Days in Tacoma)

Way out on the Eastern outskirts of Tacoma, there's a section of town where the animals nearly outnumber the people. Today, my eldest and I drove out there to investigate a rumor about a wonderful organic meat market, right in the midst of some local farms.

The shop part of the Meat Shop of Tacoma occupies a tiny space, but they offer virtually everything a carnivorous cook could want, from standards like steaks and fryers, to oxtails, tongue, and kidneys. A small selection is available fresh daily in their meat case, the rest is available frozen. I purchased some organic sausage, on special this week at 7.70/pound, while my daughter doodled on butcher paper with crayons and stickers provided by the shop owner. (They also have a small basket of toys for kids to play with while parents shop.)

Right now, there's a house down the street with quite a large group of fuzzy newborn lambs running around in the back yard.

From now on, I know where I will be getting my holiday turkeys and roasts.

Thanks for the tip. Today, I was just thinking about where to get organic meats around here. I find that I have to hit every store in the area just to go grocery shopping. This sounds like a great place to load up on meat!

Yay! Glad to hear you found the place -- it's definitely a place we have on our "stock-up" shopping list. And it's kind of an adventure to find it. Our munchkins seem to enjoy it, as well. Plus, then it's a great excuse to go stop at the shops on Garfield Street in front of PLU on the way home. Highlights there include Northern Pacific Coffee Company; I believe there's a great and affordable Mexican restaurant there, though I forget the name; then there's From the Bayou, with its fabulous cajun food (I recommend the po' boy sandwiches at lunch, and the etouffde at dinner -- especially the crawfish version, of either; and many more; and wandering the PLU grounds with its vast expanses of green and trees and pretty brick buildings.

I need to try out that part of town sometime. I took kind of a weird route, down Waller all the way from 72nd, so I didn't see much in the way of civilization.

Too expensive! Might as well just buy "natural" meat from the grocery stores that have no antibiotics or hormones.
I've been to the meat shop of tacoma a few times and it's nothin special really. The meat doesn't really taste different than grocery store meat. The only really good things is that it has no added stuff, but like I said you can get that from "natural" meat that's just not organic though. Not worth the extra several dollars a pound, in my opinion.

One of the purposes of buying meat from the meatshop is to support local businesses. You can buy natural antibiotic free meat from most stores, but they aren't necessarily from local farms. That's why I like shopping at The Meat Shop
