McKinley Playfield (186 Good Days in Tacoma)

McKinley Playfield (which is not McKinley Park)has a brand new sprayground, just opened this week. The official sprayground grand opening celebration takes place at this park today, from 1 to 4 pm. This sprayground is a bit bigger than the one at Jefferson Park, and was quite a bit more crowded when we visited this Tuesday.

Crowds seem to be a good thing in the Summer Playground program, the kids get more involved in the activities staff plan for the day. The staff at this park were wonderful, and had the kids totally wrapped up in playing some complicated tag-like game. In addition to games, they serve free lunch from 12-1, for everyone under the age of 18, and a snack starting at 4 pm.

While my eldest played games with the big kids, my youngest and her three year old friend enjoyed the playground. McKinley playfield has Kompani play structures, like the ones at the zoo and Jefferson, but unlike those this one has more to offer to the under 5 set. Our 14 month old companion had a great time on the toddler structure and the baby swings. She also enjoyed toddling around the outskirts of the sprayground, which is built with just enough room for a parent to sit on the edge and be out of the range of the spray, with everything that shoots out pointing into the sprayground where it won't surprise a small child unless she decides to go for it.

The playfield also has a nice basketball court, a soccer field, and a baseball diamond. Due to some construction issues, the bathroom wasn't operational this Tuesday. Metro Parks assures us they will be up and running for the party today. Now let's just hope the weather cooperates!
