Masa (63 Good Days in Tacoma)
I like this place much better without the night time "hot spot" crowd. I stopped in for lunch on Tuesday and Masa won me over.

First, there are these chips. These are good. They are gluten free. They are warm and crispy and slightly spicy and just awesome. I may have eaten half a basket. I'm not proud.

The real food's not bad either. The beans are perfectly tender and covered in sharp Mexican cheese, the jicama slaw is great, and the fish tacos are good, although the mahi mahi was slightly overcooked.
My only complaint? The prices are a little high for lunch. The going rate for lunch around these parts is really about 8.00 an entree, and theirs clock in at $11.00. True, they have a few "light" items like chile relleno, (Chile relleno and light are really concepts not having much relation to each other. As much as I love the stuff. Anyway, theirs is apparently breaded prior to frying.) but it you want tacos with rice and beans that will set you back $11.00. Absolutely, these are some good tacos, but that's a little steeper than I can afford. With a horchata and tip lunch cost me about $17.00, which means you won't see another food review on this site this week.

Masa's a great-looking place. One whole wall is covered in Dia de los Muertos murals, and at lunch time things are quiet enough to soak up the atmosphere.
Tomorrow night, Masa will be hosting the third annual Dia de los Muertos procession on 6th Avenue. Stop by at 6:45 to take part in the procession, which will loop back around and end at the restaurant, where Mexican sweet breads and hot chocolate will warm you up.

We don't do Masa with our 3 year-old son - we reserve it for "grown-up time." We also prefer it for lunch and occassionally happy hour and often just sit at the bar and have the chips and guacamole -- awesome! Also enjoy the a la carte tacos and taquitos. They have a really fantastic Malbec wine and we usually have that because I think their margaritas are a rip off.
