Margaret's Cafe (120 Good Days in Tacoma)
Margaret's is a calm, airy space in the midst of lunch hour chaos in downtown Tacoma. We stopped in for coffee, milk, and a cookie after dropping big sister off for her first day of school, and before a lunch meeting down the street.
Margaret's is a simple soup, sandwich, and salad place with a few breakfast options like house-made granola and Irish oatmeal. The handmade rolls they were whipping up right in the middle of the day smelled amazing, and their pastry case is filled with tasty treats that look like they're made right on site.
The interior is shabby chic and a little bit feminine without being too girly or cluttered. There was plenty of space at noon on a weekday, room enough for a lunch meeting and uncrowded enough to eat an unhurried meal even on a half-hour lunch break.
I like everything about Margaret's except that they're not open on weekends. (Which is probably why we never noticed them before.) Their hours are 7-3, Monday through Friday.

Now, what Margaret's is REALLY known for is her salads. On Thursdays, the line is out the door for her fabulous Fiesta Salad. And if you're late, sometimes she runs out. (Of salad! How awesome is that! OK, not if you're the last one through the door, but downtown addiction to Margaret's salads has good to be something good ...) Anyhow, Tuesdays are also pretty crowded for the Cobb. The soup and quiche are also phenomenal. And a good friend is addicted to her Caesar salads, which are available daily. (The soup and salad options have daily menu changes in general.)
And for those of you cupcake lovers out there ... yes, Hello Cupcake is fun and good and cute, but you must experience Margaret's coconut cupcakes or chocolate with peanut butter frosting as well. Giant, sumptuous cupcakes with ample gooey frosting. DIVINE!
