Get Engaged:
Empowering Teens in Their Own Learning and Lives
Presentation and Discussion with Sandi Wollum, Head of School
Middle school is a critical period in the process of adolescent development. Teens begin to develop a new sense of themselves and their place in their communities. Gifted teens can become frustrated when they find themselves in academic environments that don't provide adequate intellectual challenges. As they become increasingly aware that they think and learn differently than many of their age peers, they can struggle with how to be themselves and yet fit in with others. This presentation will focus on key elements of adolescent intellectual, social and emotional development, and on how to get your child engaged in his or her own learning. Exploring interests, participating in community service, and developing a sense of the relevance of learning in life are elements of keeping gifted middle school students engaged, motivated, and even excited about learning. Discover what we've learned from our students at Seabury Middle School, and about what you can do to support your gifted teen.
