Foss Waterway Seaport Museum and Winterfest - This Weekend!

Last week, we took advantage of the extra time off from school and checked out the new Foss Waterway Seaport Museum (formerly the Working Waterfront Museum) on Dock Street. We had a great time at the latest addition to Tacoma's museum lineup, making wooden boats and checking out the science-y "Finding Your Way" exhibit on loan from the Exploratorium.

The museum's biggest hits included a "turn your face into a map projection" station (the kids thought this was hilarious) and a magnetized earth sandbox illustrating the planet's magnetic field.  We were the only family using the cavernous space last week, and I could easily envision watching a toddler in the "Discovery Wharf" play area while older children explored the other exhibits.  It might be more difficult to do that on a crowded day, but the museum  definitely has a nice range of activities for all ages.

You can check out the Seaport Museum for yourself any time, or see it all decked out for the holidays this weekend at "Winterfest" - a few highlights include:

  • The arrival by boat of Captain Claus (Noon Saturday and noon Sunday)
  • Pictures with Captain Claus (Saturday 1-6 pm, Sunday 1 – 5 pm.)
