Fern Hill Coffee House and Los Caballero (223 Good Days in Tacoma: Exploring the Fern Hill District)

I'm a sucker for a really nice neighborhood website. Or at least, a reasonably up to date one. Fern Hill does a great job of advertising their little hamlet. Today, the littlest and I loaded up the car with a small fortune's worth of gasoline, and drove out to 84th and S Park to check out Fern Hill Coffee House and environs.

Fern Hill Coffee House is a cute little place, on a small strip of S Park St. that has a real "main street America" sort of look to it. According to the Fern Hill Business District website, the place was originally built as a Wells Fargo stop. Today, it's occupied by a friendly little coffee shop with comfy couches and a chest full of ice cream bars. We ordered up a blended mocha and a fruit smoothie and hung out on the comfortable furniture, while regulars came in and chatted up the owner.

After our coffee break, we wandered a bit through the small business district. Most of the interesting shops were closed at 9:30 in the morning, like Park Avenue Books (they open at 10:30) and Handcrafted by Design (open at 10), but we did poke around in Los Caballero, a fun family-run hispanic grocery. This is a great spot to buy inexpensive spices, seasonings, and Latin-American candies.

Handcrafted by Design wasn't open, but they do seem to sell quite a few hand-made patriotic decor items. If you're looking for something for Memorial Day or the Fourth of July, they'd be a good place to try. Apparently, most of their items are handcrafted by active duty members, spouses, or veterans of the armed forces.
