Contract Negotiations Continue as Strike Continues

Tacoma teachers contract negotiations continued all day today. As of 9:30 p.m. both sides were continuing contract negotiations at an undisclosed location within the Tacoma School District, Tacoma Teachers Association reports. Remember, school is closed Monday.

Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound announced tonight all four of their Tacoma locations will open early tomorrow at 7 a.m. for teens and kids to be occupied during the teachers strike.

Here's the latest update from the bargaining table from TEA posted on their website:

Contract negotiations began Sunday morning and are continuing at an undisclosed location somewhere in the Tacoma School District. Negotiations continued as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Offered earlier today, the latest proposal from Tacoma teachers calls for a committee to research displacement policy changes, and for a majority of the committee to make recommendations. Those recommendations would go to the district administration and Tacoma teachers for approval.

It’s important for Tacoma teachers and the community to know the Tacoma Education Association Bargaining Team is working hard to find solutions that are fair, consistent and objective.

Proposals continue to be traded back and forth, and things change quickly, so we’re not always going to be posting or publicizing each new proposal.

Negotiators need the flexibility to modify and update proposals as necessary. The TEA Bargaining Team also continues to offer compromise language around salaries.

We hope that the district administration follows the judge’s order and is negotiating in good faith. The only place a settlement can be reached is at the bargaining table.

Tacoma teachers will be picketing Monday as scheduled, unless there is a tentative agreement.
