Anyone else have a dog who is an escape artist?

I have a german shepard/malamute mix. He is 2 and quite possibly is the smartest dog on Earth, but not for his own good.

My dog has escaped from a fenced back yard, a completley fenced kennel, a garage, a crate and now a laundry room. I cannot go to work and come back with him in the same place I left him. It is the craziest thing I have ever seen. I have given him toys, bones, stuffed animals, you name it and I have tried it. I have tried leaving him out in the house, but that leads to horrible consequences.

I have gone through the full range of emotions: anger, mortified, sadness, disbelief and now I just have to laugh so I don't cry.

Has anyone had any success with keeping your dog in your yard? I don't know what else to do. I am afraid he will get out of the yard and get hit by a car, but I have to go to work.

Thanks for any advice/tips you may have. I don't want to get rid of him, but I don't want him to get hurt either.

Escape artist

I have a dog that escapes but not as bad as your dog. I suggest since you have tried everything is to try he yard. He may be sucure in the yard. Also, try a trainier to train him to not escape. You willbe shown how to control situation but you'll have to do the grunt work and do the actual frequent training.

I know some people find these things extreme...

but how about an underground electric fence?  My two dogs got out, got into a fight with another dog, the other dog's owners lied and told animal control my dogs viciously attacked their dog (which we found out too late that was not the case) and my two were put to sleep.  Keep your dog in your yard and do whatever you have to to avoid my situation.  Oh, and I almost got stuck with an $8000 vet bill to top it off.

I'm always watching Ceasar Millan. He would ask how much exercise your dog gets. Not having enough makes them antsy. You might consider taking him to one of the three local off leash parks where he can run. Pt. Defiance, McKinley Hill area and Ft. Steilacoom

Dog training

Any great dog trainier, including Ceasar and Victoria Stilwell would ask it.

hmm

Do you by any chance live across the street from me?  I have no helpful obedience advice, but I definitely recommend making sure your neighbors all have your number because I don't know who to call about the very nice looking dog from across the street who just took a stroll through my front yard and then crossed back in front of traffic.

What are your feelings on those invisible fence collars?

Nope, my guy has been in the house now. He isn't allowed outside anymore. He hasn't been left outside since the beginning of May. Good idea to give out our phone number though, just incase.
We didn't feel our yard or kennel were big enough to have an invisible fence. He would be miserable. Thanks for the thoughts!
