Several local blogs have mentioned this place today, but after trying it out for dinner today I can't wait to jump on that bandwagon. On the corner of Tacoma Ave and South 2nd, lies the St. Helen's Cafe, freshly opened today.
This is an order-at-the-counter place that puts all of its energy into wonderful food. It's menu isn't too unique for the area: burgers, fries, fish and chips, and a few pasta dishes. What sets this place apart is that they do what they do so well. The french fries were perfectly hot, neither too crispy nor too soggy. The fish was nothing short of amazing: perfect batter, lightly crispy without being too bready or oily. The huzzbund gives the burgers two thumbs up, that is, if he could put it down for long enough. The children seemed to enjoy their food, but honestly once mine came I didn't really notice. No waiting around for a check made it a very family-friendly choice, too. We got there a few minutes after five and had demolished everything by 5:30.
If I had one complaint, and it isn't really a complaint so much as a wish, it would be for an extended condiment bar with burger fixings. That, and ketchup bottles at the table rather than the pump it into a little paper cup method. All very minor in the grand scheme of things. I recommend anyone not vegan or on a diet immediately stop what you are doing and get down there before they close at 9 pm. A staff of 12 or so servers are hanging out waiting to bring all that good food to your table.
