105 Good Days in Tacoma: Garfield Book Company

(A note about the new ads, if you're curious)

The other day I was asking for rainy day play suggestions. Here's one I never expected to find: a bookstore with a brand new Kompani play structure in the kid's section.

After dropping off some cardboard at Blueberry Park this Tuesday (By the way, the Blueberry Park Volunteers can always use cardboard boxes in any condition, just be sure to contact them first.) I was pretty far down Pacific already, so we took the opportunity to do some exploring at PLU.

Garfield Street Books is the PLU bookstore, so I was surprised to see such a great-looking children's section. The play structure is smallish and probably best suited to kids under 5, and it is surrounded by full-price books and kitty-corner to an area containing lots of candy, (although they've kindly kept it somewhat out of sight) still, it looks like it could be a fun way to spend an hour on a rainy day. They also have a 0-10 storytime Saturday mornings from 11 to noon.

Upstairs where the textbooks are, there's also a huge section of home education books. Not just things like "what your fist grader should know,"--the very basic stuff that's often labeled "home ed" at most bookstores--but actual curriculum materials like Saxon Math and others. I'm coming back with more money to spend soon.

There's an "Origin 23 Degrees"(formerly Firehouse Coffee) in the works for the adults, and a Fair Trade shop on the other side of the store.  (Update:  A Forza has opened in the cafe space.)

My children enjoyed the dinosaur find kit (soap like material with ability to dig for dinosaur bones inside) and the selection of creative learning puzzles. And, if you have a toddler, check out the Future Scholar Sink in the restrooms. Wow!

We'll have to check out the sink next time.
