Lyle Quasim Talk on “The Fire Within” Rescheduled

Lyle Quasim, the retiring president of Bates Technical College and longtime social activist and political leader, will present a talk on “The Fire Within” at University of Puget Sound on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012.

City Council Passes Marriage Equality Legislative Amendment

At last evenings city council meeting, Council Member Ryan Mello introduced a legislative amendment about marriage equality meaning the city supports passage of state legislation on marriage equality.

Supporter of marriage equality, Justin Leighton said Tuesday evening, "The City of Tacoma, The Council and the Mayor have put themselves on the record on being on the right side of history tonight."

City Council approves contract for T.C. Broadnax as City Manager

City Council members approved a two-year contract with T.C. Broadnax tonight to become Tacoma’s new city manager.

Pending final signature of the contract later this week, Broadnax is scheduled to begin working February 13 at a starting salary of $221,208. For 2012, Broadnax’s pay will be subject to a temporary reduction of five percent, making his first year salary $210,248.

Martin Luther King Jr. Book to be Released Mid-January

The Rev. Martin Luther King spent his life fighting for civil rights, but people forget he was equally committed to economic justice. A new paperback edition of King’s labor speeches clearly links these issues to today, according to King’s editor, Michael Honey. 

24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration to be held Jan. 16

Celebrate the dream and the dreamer at the 24th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. This year’s theme, “Forgiving the Past ~ Embracing the Future,” is a musical tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
