Giant Burgers Invade South Tacoma Way

My big girl's birthday is so close to the holidays that we usually just have a small family celebration and hold off on the party until around the end of January.

Somehow, this tradition has become an excuse to say yes to things we would not subject friends and their children to.

Discovery Pond Playground Opens at Nature Center

Yesterday, Tacoma's kids got their first crack at "Discovery Pond," a wonderful combination playground/nature exhibit outside the Tacoma Nature Center.

Discovery Pond
At 7 and 9, my kids still love to poke around inside the Nature Center, but they are getting a little bit old for the exhibits. Discovery Pond is the perfect addition for kids of all ages, but especially for school-aged kids who may have outgrown the smaller indoor space.

Sprayground and Wading Pools, Updated for 2010!

I know it's super late, but here's the Sprayground/Wading Pool map all updated for 2010.

The Wright Park sprayground is a work in progress, and Franklin's update should take place this year. Hopefully, a new sprayground will open there next fall and there won't be any gap between wading pool removal and sprayground installation as there was at Wright.

Paldo World Food Court, A Whole New World on the Lakewood Border

The sign said "Your appetite will be stimulated by unique flavor of the Chicky Pub." Totally, it was. Unfortunately, everything really good at Chicky Pub appeared to be breaded and fried, so I opted for Nak Won, the little Korean joint next to it.

Wapato Lake

I confess, I had never been to Wapato Lake before yesterday afternoon. With the mall sewage issue, the rampant algae, and the ensuing water treatment debacle, followed by attempts to pull an entire car out of the lake, it just didn't sound too inviting. I was very wrong.

I don't know how it used to look, but this is the lake yesterday, post restorative treatments:

Taqueria Los Amigos

After hiding from the heat and humidity at Odyssey 1 yesterday afternoon, the kids and I took a long ride out to South Tacoma Way with the windows down, enjoying the cool breeze that finally blew in and swept away the creeping ickiness (I believe that is the technical term) that had made us cranky all weekend.

Pho Than Brothers (Dinner Under $15, no Frying Involved)

Due to the generosity of the fabulous Girlfriend in Tacoma, Tacomadaddy and I found ourselves unexpectedly without children last night. All night. (Sweet!)
