Outlook for Foss Looking More Promising

At tonight's Tacoma School Board study session, a majority of members seemed to indicate opposition to the idea of closing Foss High School.  They asked Superintendent Jarvis to come back with other options, most likely to include an additional 1 million in administrative cuts, as well as cuts to professional development programs and class size increases.

Tonight's meeting was just a study session and no votes were cast.  

No one voiced strong opposition to the idea of closing and consolidating elementary schools with low and declining enrollments.  

Tacoma School Board and District Officials Discuss School Closures

The News Tribune reports the Tacoma School Board is considering temporary closure of Foss High School and several smaller elementary schools as a way to address a looming budget crisis in the wake of massive cuts to state funding.

According to the TNT, district officials revealed at tonight's School Board study session that elementary schools with enrollment of less than 300 would be most likely to face closure, with an eventual goal of increasing class size by an average of 1 student per class.  Schools in this category include:
