Stingray Cove Exhibit Opens Saturday at Point Defiance Zoo

Stingray Cove opens Saturday at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, giving visitors the opportunity to reach into the water and touch five species of stingrays.

The exhibit brings a new level of excitement to the zoo, headlining an exciting summer season that will be filled with the wonder of animals in the water as well as on land.

By Order of the Mayor: December is Zoolights Month in Tacoma

Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland has proclaimed December Zoolights Month in Tacoma.

The proclamation, issued during a recent City Council meeting, recognizes the holiday-season lights festival as a “Tacoma community treasure” that has drawn more than 2 million visitors since it began in 1988.

“Tacoma is a brighter, more family friendly place because of this 25-year tradition,” the proclamation reads.

Visit and Help Name Zoo's Clouded Leopard Cubs

Come see the new clouded leopard cubs in their dens of the Cats and Canopy exhibit this weekend!

Watch zoo staff feed the cubs during their two scheduled feedings daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They will be sleeping in their crate during other parts of the day.

New male tiger coming to Point Defiance Zoo to breed

 

Point Defiance Zoo is welcoming a new Sumatran tiger on Wednesday and staff hope his presence will result in new cubs.   

 

Malosi, a male tiger from Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii, is coming to Tacoma to breed with Jaya, the zoo’s female tiger and mother of the two tiger cubs born in 2010. Malosi – whose name means strong and powerful in Samoan – is three years old. He has not yet fathered a litter of cubs.

Point Defiance Zoo's Mali died of toxins

Tacoma KOMO reports, Point Defiance Zoo vetrinarians report deadly toxins created by intestinal bacteria killed the zoo's endangered Sumatrian tiger cub, Mali earlier this summer. 

The one-year-old cub died in late July after undergoing emergency surgery and cardiac arrest, according to the zoo.

Necropsy results released last week showed toxins in Mali's intestines, kidneys, and bloodstream overpowered her body which stopped her heart.
