Today, Abraham Lincoln is a beloved American icon, widely considered to be our best president. It was not always so. Larry Tagg's The Unpopular Mr. Lincoln is the first study of its kind to concentrate on what Lincoln's contemporaries actually thought of him during his lifetime. Be forewarned: your preconceived notions are about to be shattered.

Cafe La Vie

Just at the point in the summer when I was starting to get really nihilistic, free dance camp appeared, like a dream. I told no one about it, not really believing it could be true. But sure enough, this morning I dropped the girls off at Action Dance in the Nalley Valley. Not only was it really a free camp, but the owner did not appear to be an axe murderer and the classrooms are really nice.

Nhu Thuy

Imagine how cool it would be if there were a whole neighborhood in Tacoma where all the businesses were open on Sunday, and everyone came out and walked around and shopped and ate and socialized all day. Wait a minute, there is!

Gas Station Park (Mystery Park at S 48th and Park Avenue)

Update: The official name is "Gas Station Park" - more on this later.

OK, it's not really a mystery park, but that's what it seemed like when we ran into this bright blue cookie-moster colored park yesterday. Turns out, it was converted from an old gas station through the Health Department's "Brownfields" project and is now being transformed into a playground by the South End Neighborhood Council.

Sawyer Tot Lot and Safety Issues

The Sawyer Tot Lot is a newly-installed playground at Sawyer and South 35th Street. It can be a little tricky to find, but once you realize that Sawyer doesn't go all the way through and you have to access it directly from 35th, it's not too difficult. Two days ago, I was there with my 4 year old, my friend Courtney, and her two children ages 4 and almost 2. She lives within walking distance but had only been to the park once since it opened last Fall, because of the isolated location and difficult design for the age of her kids. Today I came back with my own two, and they had a very good time on the equipment, especially my eldest.

Vien Dong (82 Good Days in Tacoma: Mo Pho)

Sorry. Could not resist. Before our trip to Terry's Berries yesterday, my friend and Lincoln District resident took us out to lunch at Vien Dong, a popular Vietnamese place on 38th.

Than's Garden (263 Good Days in Tacoma: Lunch in Tacoma's International District)

A short drive up the hill from downtown or down 38th from the Mall, takes you to a part of Tacoma where the Vietnamese signs outnumber the English ones. Today, after a few chores near the Tacoma Mall, we made our way to that part of town for a lunch adventure.
