Tacomamama picks for the week of June 22-28th:
Today (Sunday): Meeker Days, downtown Puyallup, 10 am to 5 pm. We caught a glimpse of this huge festival yesterday while attending a wedding reception. Looks like blocks and blocks of fun. (Most of it costing $$)
Tomorrow (Monday): Speaking of money....opening day for the free Metro Parks Summer Playground Program is tomorrow. The program features 8 weekday locations and 4 weekend spots (it's fun to try them all) with free lunch and snack at all but one. Each park has either a wading pool or sprayground. Kids 6 and under MUST have parents present, however staff do not monitor the comings and goings of the children and parental supervision is recommended for all age groups.
Wednesday: Catch some bug-themed fun with "The Magical Adventures of Bug Boy" and "Little Bugs with Big Jobs" at the South Tacoma Library. 3411 South 56th Street, 3 pm to 5:30 pm. Free!
Thursday: Market Day! I really do love market day. Free play at the Children's Museum from 10 am to 5 pm, and outdoor bubble/craft fun at the Tacomamama booth from 9 am to 2 pm. (suggested contribution $1 per family) This week, the Children's Museum may provide a great craft.
Friday: Frost Park chalk art competition. 9th and Commerce, 12 pm to 1 pm. (free) Hang out and watch the art form, or show up at 12 noon sharp and take part in the competition. Moderately kid-friendly, park is at a very busy intersection. For more details, visit FeedTacoma.com.
Friday-Sunday: "Down on The Farm" at Wilcox Family Farm. Tours of the farm, an antique tractor show, tractor pull, Texas style barbeque, rock climbing, specialty coffee, a live blue grass band and much more. For more information please call 1-800-568-6456. 40400 Harts Lake Valley Rd, Roy. 9 am to 9 pm.
Also Friday-Sunday: Taste of Tacoma with Art a la Carte, Point Defiance Park. Huge festival of food, entertainment, and art vendors.
Saturday: In Between Place grand opening celebration and fashion show. 6th and Prospect, above Rector's Antiques. 1 pm. Free fashion show featuring owner Pomai Taggart's creative and whimsical designs. All are welcome to participate, fittings take place at 11 am. Also Saturday: free Community Day at Tacoma Art Place. Check out this unique community art studio space with a day of free classes. 10 am to 6 pm. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Looking ahead to next week:
Urban Art Festival, Sunday June 29th. Tacomamama will be on hand with bubbles and crafts for the kids, (supplies generously provided by Urban Art Festival. Thanks!) at this showcase for local artists and artisans. Live music, dancing, and a general off-beat vibe make this festival extra fun. Fireman's Park, 9th and A Street Downtown. Noon to dusk, rain or shine.
Thursday July 3rd - Monday July 7th: Tall Ships Tacoma! and Shore Leave.
